Permanent magnet Penning trap for heavy ion storage
The construction and operation of a Penning ion trap is described in which the trapping field is provided by a cladded NdFeB permanent magnet. Studies with atomic ions show that the trap can provide stable ion confinement for extended periods ~*100 ms! making it suitable for use in a wide variety of applications. Use of the trap to measure the lifetime of excited SF6 * and C7F14 * ions produced...
متن کاملA single hollow-beam optical trap for cold atoms
We present an optical trap for atoms which we have developed for precision spectroscopy measurements. Cold atoms are captured in a dark region of space inside a blue-detuned hollow laser beam formed by an axicon. We analyse the light potential in a ray optics picture and experimentally demonstrate trapping of laser-cooled metastable xenon atoms.
متن کاملTheory of an optical dipole trap for cold atoms
The theory of an atom dipole trap composed of a focused, far red-detuned, trapping laser beam, and a pair of red-detuned, counterpropagating, cooling beams is developed for the simplest realistic multilevel dipole interaction scheme based on a model of a ~315!-level atom. The description of atomic motion in the trap is based on the quantum kinetic equations for the atomic density matrix and the...

متن کاملTwo Cold Atoms in a Harmonic Trap 1
Two ultracold atoms moving in a trap interact weakly at a very short distance. This interaction can be modeled by a properly regularized contact potential. We solve the corresponding time{independent Schrr odinger equation under the assumption of a parabolic, spherically symmetric trapping potential.
